SOLIHULL CELEBRATES BLACK HISTORY MONTH 2008
Solihull, like the rest of the UK, will be celebrating Black History Month from Wednesday 1 October to Friday 31 October 2008.
Black History Month is a national festival. It highlights the history, cultural heritage, achievements and the valued contributions that African, Caribbean and Asian communities make to the UK communities. It is a festival where people from all cultural backgrounds and age groups can celebrate and learn from each other.
This year marks the commemoration of the 60th anniversaries of the arrival of the ship "Empire Windrush" and the setting up of the National Health Service (which became a major employer of the Windrush generation). This has significant meaning for Solihull. Opportunities to reflect on our past and better understand how we can work together in the future are presented by this festival.
This year Solihull’s Black History month programme has a rich variety of events highlighting the contribution made by people from the African, Caribbean and Asian cultures. The events include theatre, art, music, dance and food. The programme caters for all age groups. The events will happen in the North and south of the Borough of Solihull.
