What is Equality?

Equality is about treating people fairly. This includes avoiding less favourable treatment on grounds of gender, colour, race, nationality, religion, ethnic or national origin, marital status, pregnancy, age, disability, social background, sexual orientation, and religion/faith.

Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council has a clear commitment to promoting equality and diversity, including removing discrimination and harassment. This applies to employment as well as to the services that we provide and commission.

What is Diversity?

Diversity is about recognising and respecting difference and treating people with dignity. It means understanding that each individual is unique, and recognising our individual differences.  These can be along the dimensions of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, age, physical abilities, religious beliefs,
political beliefs, or other ideologies.  It is the exploration of these differences in a safe, positive, and nurturing environment. It is about understanding each other and moving beyond simple tolerance to embracing and celebrating the rich dimensions of diversity contained within each individual
